About 15 years ago (when Ariel came) I had to make a pact with myself that no matter what, no matter how sad the story, there would be NO MORE BIRDS. I sometimes think I should never have opened this Pandora's box. When will I have the freedom to just not worry about them? It is nice having a buddy for life, but sometimes I feel like the birds have outlived their welcome. I've had Ariel, our cockatoo, for about 15 years (I'm not really sure when she came to our lives.) Having birds is just what I am, I guess. I got Fergie, my blue-crown, when I was 28. She lasted 1/2 of my life up to that point. I lived with her many years and she died while I was on a long vacation when I was 44 years old. I got her before my university years (I went back after deciding that not having a degree was bad). I got Squeaky, my plumhead (who is now dead) when I was 22. But none of us would be here if we did not like parrots, so I guess that tells you something.

Good parrots for a new parrot owner, rather than a starter parrot, you see.Īgain, it is not so much a bad thing, as it is a warning. Most of the reason people tend to suggest the smaller parrots (cockatiels, budgies, etc) is not because they are "starter parrots" - they still have all the personality of the larger ones - but rather that they tend to be easier to deal with, and if you piss them off you don't pay in blood (as much). Some toddlers are adorable, but even the good ones can sometimes be terrors. It is not just having a companion for 40 years, it is like dealing with a toddler for 40 years. This is why we see many large parrots passed around through multiple homes in their lives. People who jump in and get a Cockatoo (or other large parrot) for instance can quickly find themselves in over their heads in dealing with them. That is, you want to be absolutely sure that you can both deal with and care for your companion for that length of time. It is not so much a "bad for owners" thing so much as a "this is not a decision you should make lightly" sort of thing. r/grassparrots For all your Australian grass parrot needs Looking for bird necessities online?
